About
Picture Mix is a way to think through problems and ideas using pictures.
What is Picture Mix?
Picture Mix is a tool to help us think visually. It uses simple, hand-drawn images to help us describe ideas and think through problems.
Why think visually?
Some of us find it hard to think clearly just using words. It's difficult to organise our ideas, to get our thoughts in the right order and find the words to express them. Thinking visually can enable us to pursue a thought or a question in a completely different way. It encourages us to spread out our thoughts in front of us, using a series of images, so we can see new patterns and connections. It can help us find better ways of expressing our ideas or solving problems.
What makes Picture Mix special as a tool for visual thinking?
Picture Mix is unique in its flexibility. One picture on its own is probably not going to be enough to fully express what you need to say. Picture Mix lets you experiment with different combinations of pictures, so you are more likely to discover how to express a problem or an idea more fully. The process of arranging a connected series of pictures like this in a mix gives you many more possibilities for describing thoughts more exactly, or exploring problems with greater clarity. It can also help you get into a rhythm of thinking.
Who drew the pictures?
They're mostly by me, Andrew Crick. Thanks go to Emma (pictures tend to be big), Cat (pictures tend to be bold) and Helen (pictures tend to be big and bold) for the rest.
Who is it for?
It's for anybody who wants to use it. I hope it will appeal to those who think of themselves as 'visual thinkers'. But even those who are good with words will find it stimulating, a different way of approaching problems.
I also hope that Picture Mix will be a particular help to people with autism or dyslexia, who may struggle to find the right words, and who may be more comfortable using pictures to express themselves.
